Shehnai loses its beloved master

Ustad Bismillah Khan, India's greatest exponent of the shehnai, whom President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam described as a musician "who comes only once in a lifetime", died in his hometown Varanasi yesterday.

Varanasi/New Delhi: Ustad Bismillah Khan, India's greatest exponent of the shehnai, whom President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam described as a musician "who comes only once in a lifetime", died in his hometown Varanasi yesterday.
Khan was honoured with the nation's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001. He was 90.
He was the patriarch of a joint family of about 70 that consisted of five sons, three daughters and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was laid to rest in Varanasi, the Hindu holy town that had been his home for decades, yesterday evening with full state honours.
His body was carried in a gun carriage from his Benia Bagh residence to Fatima Dargah, where he used to play the shehnai (a north Indian oboe whose sound is considered particularly auspicious) every Mohurrum, for the last rites. A contingent of the Indian Army marched alongside.
Khan was among the very few Indians who had the distinction of receiving all the national awards Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and the highest honour, Bharat Ratna.
The shehnai virtuoso was taken ill about 10 days ago and admitted to the Heritage Hospital in Varanasi August 17. His death came at 2.20am.
As news of his death spread, hundreds of people thronged Khan's home to pay their last respects.
Several prominent Hindu saints and seers as well as Christian clerics turned up to pay their tribute to Bismillah Khan, who was widely known for his secular outlook and embodied the best of India's composite culture. Many maulanas and moulvis also came.
Wreaths were placed on the body on behalf of President Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
The Indian Government yesterday declared a day's national morning as a mark of respect to Khan. Flags were flown at half-mast on all government buildings as part of the mourning.
All government offices and schools in Uttar Pradesh state were declared closed yesterday as a mark of respect to the musician.
Doctors attending on the maestro said he had been admitted on account of "electrolyte imbalance", even as all his vital organs were functioning normally.
"He had shown improvement over the past two days, but continued to feel very weak," Khan's personal secretary Syed Javed Ahmad said.
Siddharth Rai, the hospital vice president, said: "Bismillah Khan's ailment was simply age-related. He did not suffer from any kind of disease."
A pall of gloom descended yesterday on Dumraon, a small village in Bihar's Buxar district that is Khan's birthplace.
The news of the legendary musician's death has left the residents of the village in a state of shock as hundreds had prayed in mosques and temples for his speedy recovery. "It was painful to hear that he is no more," said Syed Kalam, a villager.
Born on March 21, 1916, Bismillah Khan was from a family of musicians who played in the royal court of Dumraon, which was then a princely state. He was trained under his uncle, the late Ali Bux 'Vilayatu', who used to play the shehnai at the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
"Not only Dumraon, the entire district is deeply mourning the death of Khan saab," said a district official.
Another villager added: "He was proud of Dumraon. We used to take pride in taking his name and telling people that we are from no less a place than Ustad Bismillah Khan's native village."
Though the younger generation of Dumraon have hardly seen Khan in their village, middle-aged and elderly people recalled that he had visited the place in 1979 during the shooting of a Bhojpuri film and once again in 1983.
Murli Manohar Srivastava, who is writing a book on Bismillah Khan, said it was sad that the musician was not given the recognition and honour he deserved at his birthplace.
Shaikh Chunnu, a Dumraon resident, said: "He was honoured all over the world except in Dumraon."
Over a decade ago, then chief minister Lalu Prasad laid the foundation stone of a town hall to be built here in the honour of Bismillah Khan. But the project never materialised.
According to Srivastava, Bismillah Khan's property was sold off many years ago by his relatives.
Glowing tributes: A great son of India, says prime minister
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday paid glowing tributes to Bismillah Khan, saying he was "a great son of India".
"A true symbol of our composite culture, Khan Sahib, through his mellifluous rendering of the shehnai, showed us that while God may manifest himself in many forms, piety finds its true expression through music," the prime minister said.
He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the maestro's family, disciples and his admirers around the world, and said: "May his music continue to bring peace and harmony to our lives."
Describing Khan as an "immortal musicologist", former prime minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh said "his music and life will keep inspiring our society for the times to come".
Condoling Khan's death, Indian Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh noted that his name has become synonymous
with Shehnai, which he said symbolised the secular ethos of Indian Classical Music.

बिहार कभी नहीं आउंगी...

( मामला जीआरपी जवानों के तांडव का)

हाथ जोड़ते हैं अब मैं बिहार कभी नहीं आउंगी....ये दिल को दहलाने वाली दास्तान है....एक रेलवे यात्री की जो अपने पूरे परिवार के साथ यात्रा कर रही थी....ट्रेन दिल्ली के लिए रवाना हुई...बाढ़ स्टेशन के पास टिकट जांच करते जीआरपी के जवान आए...पहले टिकट मांगी...पीड़ित महिला ने कहा मेरे घर वाले दूसरी बोगी में हैं....आने पर दिखा दूंगी...इतना कहना था कि आठो जवान आपे से बाहर होकर जानवरों की तरह अबला औरत पर टूट पड़े...जो अपने चार मासूमों के साथ यात्रा कर रही थीं...और देखते ही देखते इतनी पिटाई कर दी कि उन लोगों के पास रोने-बिलखने के अलावा कुछ नहीं था....अन्य यात्री मारे भय के कोई कुछ नहीं बोल पा रहे थे....

सारी हदें पारकर जीआरपी जवानों ने अपने इंसानियत को खोकर इतनी बड़ी घटना को अंजाम दिया...इसके लिए सबसे बड़ा दोष किसी को दिया जाएगा...तो वो है रेल प्रबंधन...और सबसे नकारा साबित हो रही रेलमंत्री मैडम ममता....इनका कोई ध्यान नहीं...अधिकांशत जीआरपी नशे में रहते हैं धूत...

जीआरपी के जवानों की ये कोई नई घटना नहीं...बल्कि आए दिन ऐसी घटनाओं को अंजाम देते हैं....एक तो गाड़ियों का परिचालन सुधारने की क्षमता नहीं...मगर टिकट के नाम पर पैसे वसूली की ट्रेनिंग तो कोई दानापुर रेल मंडल के इन गुंडा सिपाहियों से सीखे...वर्दी पहने ये किसी अपरादी से कम नहीं.....जो अक्सर किसी न किसी तरह से सुर्खियों में बने रहना चाहते हैं.....

आखिर कोई ऐसी बातें करता हो तो...बहुत दुखद है...आखिर क्यों ऐसा हुआ....मेरे सभी रिश्तेदार दिल्ली में रहते हैं....सिर्फ मेरी दो ननद बिहार में रहती हैं..इसीलिए आना पड़ा.....यह रोती बिलखती उस महिला की दास्तान है...जो ट्रेन से दिल्ली के लिए रवाना हुई थी....कैसे कोई अपनों को छोड़ दे किसे अपने मासूम प्यारे नहीं...अरे टिकट के लिए इतना ही तो बोला था कि उन्हें आने दो दिखाती हूं....पर वो दरिंदे नहीं माने...इन पर कोई रोक न हो तो ये यात्रियों के साथ अमानविय व्यवहार करने से कभी नहीं चुकते....काश, ये दरिंदे एक बार अपनी इंसानियत को समझते....इंसान के रुप में हैं ये भेड़िये.....कब बंद होगी ऐसी अमानवियता....कब होगी टिकट मांगने पर बंद गुंडागर्दी...कब तक लूटे जाते रहेंगे यात्री....कब तक बदनाम होता रहेगा बिहार......हर जुबां पर एक सवाल आखिर कब तक......

हाथियों का उत्पात

झारखंड में आज भी हाथियों का आतंक जारी है... सिमडेगा में बौराए हाथियों ने एक ग्रामीण की जान लेते हुए कई घरों को गिरा दिया। यही कहानी गिरिडीह में भी दुहराई गई। यहां भी हाथियों ने एक आदमी को कुचल कर मार दिया जबकि कई घरों को नष्ट कर दिया।

हाथियों ने तबाही मचा रखी है। हाल ये है कि पिछले चार महीने में हाथियों ने अकेले सिमडेगा में 12 लोगों को मौत की नींद सुला दी है। गिरिडीह में भी कम से कम तीन लोगों की मौत हाथियों के कहर से हो चुकी है। जामताड़ा में तो हाथियों का निशाना एक रेंजर ही बन गए। तबाही का ये मंजर यहीं नहीं रुका। इन हाथियों के पैरों तले हजारों एकड.की फसल को रौंदी जा चुकी है जबकि सैकड़ों घर भी गिराए जा चुके हैं। लगातार हो रही घटनाओं के बाद भी कोई ठोस प्रशासनिक कार्रवाई न होने से लोगों की नाराजगी सड़क पर उतर आई। लोग इस तरह की घटनाओं के लिए वन विभाग की लापरवाही को ही कारण मानते है

हालांकि वन विभाग हाथियों के उत्पात के लिए लोगों को ही जिम्मेदार ठहराता है। वन विभाग के लोगों का कहना है कि हाथियों के सुरक्षित अभयारण्य में लोगों की दखलअंदाजी ही उन्हें गांवों की तरफ रुख करने को मजबूर करती है। हाथियों के प्राकृतिक प्रवास केन्द्रों में भोजन की कमी के कारण हाथी गांव की तरफ निकल जाते हैं। वहां भी जब खाना नहीं मिलता तो उनकी तबाही शुरु हो जाती है।

वन्य जीवों के लिए केन्द्र की तरफ से करोड़ों की सहायता मिलती है जबकि राज्य सरकार ने भी उनके लिए एक अलग फंड बना रखा है। लेकिन इसके बावजूद उनकों भोजन न मिल पाना कहीं न कही व्यवस्था पर सवाल खड़े करता है। साथ ही लोगों को भी कहीं न कहीं ये सोचना होगा कि वे न सिर्फ हाथियों को बल्कि अन्य वन्य जीवों को उनके घरों में चैन से रहने दें तभी शायद इंसान भी अपने घर में चैन से रह पाएंगे।

नापाक इरादे

( मत खेलो खूनी खेल )

कभी मुम्बई , कभी दिल्ली, कभी जयपुर... तो इस बार काशी रक्तरंजीत हुई....मनहुस इरादे वाले भेड़िये आखिरकार कब तक खेलते रहेंगे खून की होली....हर बार दहशत के नाम पर होती है मौत सिर्फ मौत....लेकिन इन आतंकियों पर शर्म आती है...कि समाज में कुछ करने की क्षमता नहीं है, तभी तो गोली, बारुद से लोगों की जान लेकर दहशत फैलाते हैं.....

वाराणसी के काशी में कितने प्यार से मंदिर के चौखट पर मत्था टेकने आए थे....पर इन अभागों को क्या मालूम इनकी किस्मत में मौत की इबारत लिखी गई है....खबर शहर में आग की तरह फैल गई...चारो ओर कोहराम मच गया...लोग अपनों को ढुंढ़ने डरे-सहमे भागे जा रहे हैं....मौत की परवाह किए बिना एक्सक्लूसिव कि फिराक में पत्रकार दौड़ रहे हैं...तो पुलिस अपनी वही पुरानी हथियारों के साथ गस्त लगाती है....सभी का ध्यान इधर बंट गया....तब तक कहीं और दिल को दहलाने वाली घटना...........

रुको..थोड़ी देर समझो....तुम्हें क्या चाहिए..नोट..अगर हां तो हाथों में मेंहदी नही रचाई है तुने...आओ मेहनत से कमाओ फिर उसका मजा ही कुछ और है....तू तो उस सुखे पेड़ की तरह हो, जो किसी के काम आ ही नहीं सकते...अपने आतंक मचाने की फिराक में अपनी पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी को बर्बाद कर देते हो...खैर जैसी तुम्हारी मर्जी....कई बात यह भी सुनने में आया कि दबंगों के आतंक से इस रास्ते को अख्तियार करते हैं...पर मैं इसे नहीं मानता...इस तरह के घृणित काम बुजदिल लोग ही कर सकते हैं...समाज के निचले पादान पर जनमे लोग भी अपनी मेहनत, लगन से बहुत कुछ बदलते हैं....

अब वाराणसी की घटना को ही लिजीए....घटना के बाद पूरे देश में हाई अलर्ट है । लोगों से सतर्क रहने व किसी प्रकार का संदेह होने पर पुलिस को सूचित करने की अपील की जाती है.... रेलवे स्टेशन, बस अड्डा, होटल, धार्मिक..स्थानों पर सुरक्षा बढा दी जाती है । हालांकि कई ऐसे महत्वपूर्ण धार्मिक स्थलों को छोड़ दिया जाता है जो सुरक्षा के लिहाज से अति संवेदनशील हैं ।

इस नासूर को खत्म करने के लिए...हमें इसकी तह में जाना होगा...हर शहर में इंसान की भेष में बैठे भेड़िये को पहचानना होगा...चंद रुपयों के लालच में अपना इमान तो बेचते ही हैं....अपने भविष्य को भी ताक पर रख देते हैं..........एक बार एसी घटना को अंजाम देने वाले तुम सोचो..कि क्या कर रहे हो.....अरे तू जिंदगी तो किसी कि ले सकता है...पर तेरे अंदर वो क्षमता कहां जो किसी को जिंदगी दे सको.....मुंह चोरों की तरह जीते हो....मां की गोद को कलंकित करते हो.....घर की उन दिवारों को दागदार कर देते हो जहां की दिवारें भी तुम्हें धिक्कारती है.....धिक्क्कारती रहेंगी.....
