Subrata Roy was born on 10 June 1948 at Araria (40 km. north to Poornia, Bihar). He is born in Bengali Kayasth family to Sri Sudhir Chandra Roy and Srimoti Chhabi Roy. Sri Sudhir Chandra was a mechanical engineer with a transferable job and Srimoti Chhabi Roy is from Bikampur, Bangladesh. His mother Chabbi Roy along with her brothers migrated to West Bengal in 1947 during partition of Bengal. Subrata Roy studied at Holy Child School in Kolkata. He was from an upper middle class family. As a child he was always a bright student and went on to hold a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Government Technical Institute, Gorakhpur. Before he founded the Sahara Group, he had already gathered 32 years of precious experience in business development along with 18 years of experience in real estate business. He always believed in Collective Materialism and that why he calls it as Sahara Pariwar and not by some corporate company name. He believes in the collective growth through collective sharing and caring. The Group also organizes 'Sahara India Sports Awards' to felicitate the achievement and efforts of Indian sportspersons in their respective fields and provide recognition to the upcoming young talents.

Subrata Roy is into every business, as we already came across he was into real estate business likewise he was into aviation, media, film, hospitality,tourism,and many and many recently he has taken up the ownership of Pune warriors team in Indian Premier League, with all these he is into social service too.
In 1978, he opened a small office in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where his journey started. He started with three workers as a small deposits para - banking business. His office was small with a table and some chairs.
